Writing techniques
Any good writer will inform you that they adopt many varying writing techniques for different pieces that they write. For instance if you wished to write a letter asking for a position of employment within a company, you would not use one of your informal ‘chatty’ writing techniques but rather one from your selection of formal ‘business’ writing techniques.
Some of the main groups of writing techniques are descriptive writing, through this category of writing techniques a writer can permit the reader to sense situations. They can almost taste, smell, hear & feel what the writer wishes them too. These descriptive writing techniques assist the reader to understand & relate to exactly what it is the writer is trying to say through their words. This is a very common type of writing & is discovered in newspapers, books & journals.
Another group of writing techniques is known as exposition writing, this is where a writer will clarify & inform the reader of their ideas & their thoughts. These writing techniques go beyond the descriptive writing in the way that the writer describes situations in greater depth; these writing techniques are also present within magazines, newspapers & journals.
Narration is another set of writing techniques through this form a writer can literally tell their reader a story, a tale. The story has characters, a setting & the actual story, what happens. Narration is used to write novels & bedtime stories but these writing techniques are also used within the writing of plays & even movies. A movie does not just occur a movie has to be penned by a writer; this is where the movie’s script is produced. The writer will always employ the writing techniques known as narration for this kind of writing.
The next set of writing techniques are called persuasion, with persuasive writing a writer can attempt to change the reader’s opinion on a topic or a position. The writer will present all the facts & all the opinions to the reader; the concept of these writing techniques is to attempt to help the reader to understand why the opinion is right, wrong or just in the middle.
Comparison & contrast are the next writing techniques a writer will point out all the differences along with all the similarities of a particular topic. The comparison part of these writing techniques is used to point out everything that is similar, alike & what points have in common with each other. The contrast part is for the writer to show what is not alike & what is different. So you could, for instance, write about the living conditions in the Victorian era & the living conditions today, this would allow so much scope for the comparison & contrast writing techniques.
To a writer the actual writing techniques that they adopt for each individual piece of writing that they complete is imperative, it is the selected technique that enables the writer to ‘mould’ the words into the form that he/she requires.
